lightning storm hits school knocks out power for 30 seconds... school forces kids outside.. into the thunder storm for about 20 minutes..
actual quote

There was a full-fledged thunderstorm going on and they did exactly what they were trained to do," Hickey said. "I'm proud of everyone. No one panicked."

A lightening strike hit the school.

I'd think that would be sufficient reason to evacuate the school in case it was on fire no?

So someone has said the fire was put out in a few minutes by a custodian, and someone else said it took longer! Pick a side you want to be on and skag the other side!
Don't believe the teacher who said al 600 students stood under the burning eves!

I would say no. Not in the middle of a thunderstorm. Fires are fairly easy to manage compared to thunderstorms, and I dont know about down there but each school up here is supposed to be designed so that each room is mostly fire proof from each other room... mostly.

If it was my decision, the kids would be outside.

The danger would be much less imo.

Chances of being struck by lightening are low...the chances of being killed in a burning building if you stayed inside are much higher I'd expect.

one has to actually evaluate the situation when making decisions like this JTF.. an exit sign was damaged and there were sparks and smoke...evaluation ...no fire at present, maintain observation of situation and keep children inside unless situation worsens.
now evaluate the chance of being hurt from a thunderstorm, or nothing.. which is better?

From one of the comments, the roof is not compartmentalized (nothing indicating what the school is constructed with, but probably not limestone!), so a fire in the roof space would have spread easily. Its not like the students were out in an empty field with lightning strikes zapping all around them.
