Elvis Costello - July 8 - Wpg Folk Festival Elvis_costello_01
Pump it up!
British music legend Elvis Costello, joined by his band The Imposters, will make his Winnipeg Folk Festival debut Wednesday, July 8, kicking off an expanded five-day festival at Birds Hill Park. It will be Costello's first Winnipeg appearance since 1978 when he performed at the Pantages Playhouse Theatre.

Costello is a true giant in the music community. He hit the ground running in 1977 with his fiery debut My Aim is True and hasn't slowed down since. In his 32-year career he has released more 30 albums covering the stylistic gamut from punk to roots and everything in between. His new album, Secret, Profane & Sugar Cane, will be released June 2. He is well known for his collaborations in almost every genre from country to world music, and has worked with artists such as Paul McCartney, Emmylou Harris, Tony Bennett, Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch.

The 54-year-old recently started hosting his own television show, Spectacle: Elvis Costello With…, featuring interview and performance segments with other musical giants. The series can be seen in Manitoba on CTV.

He always seems to keep it fresh...can't believe it's been 32 years already. That shows he's doing something right (besides marrying that gorgeous jazz singer Dianna Kroll). Smile

Ironically, Krall looks a bit like the "other" Elvis.

Well, she sure don't look like she's been dead (or working at Burger King) for 32 years.....

The folkfest is not really my thing....I have some friends who volunteer every year and enjoy going.

For some reason they made a big car line for going into the campground yesterday so instead of having the option to park your car and walk in to get your wristbands you needed to wait in a line of cars for 2-3 hours to get to your campsite. I don't know why it was done that was but a lot of people missed quite a bit of the concert last night because of it. In past years on Thursdays when the campground is filling up it's never taken more than 20 minutes for me to get a wristband and get into the campground to setup.

Sorry, but imo the parking / drop off & pick up thing have sucked for years. It seems they try to fcuk you up in different ways every year and have been getting really good at it. (Example: each year there is only one lane used for both entry and exits from the campground...duh!!)

That's true. But at least in previous years you could get around it by packing smart and just walking your stuff in. I haven't even bothered to take my car into the campground area for the past couple years.

I was the driver for my daughter and her friends and couldn't avoid it.

Good thing I packed a fleece. When the clouds and wind came out, it was too cool for a mere t-shirt.

Tons of people, perhaps a record turn out for a Saturday. It was a record Friday for attendance.

Unless you arrive early, it can be tough to get close to a stage. I long gave up on actually getting close enough to see the performers. I'm content to just hear them. After plunking myself down at the edge of the crowd, I quickly become surrounded by a seemingly endless stream of people looking for a place to sit. The next time I sat down, I was far enough away to simply lie back and look up at the sky and enjoy the music.

The UK's Bellowhead were wrapping up their set on the mainstage when I decided to pack it in. They have an infectious celtic-symphonic sound that you can't help but shake your booty to.

Spotted by the mainstage, Phil Fontaine.

Not sure if I will go back for Sunday. I usually do, but I also have things to do.

On Thursday the campground entrance was back to it's regular system. Took a whole 5 minutes to get a wristband instead of the 2-3 hours it would have taken on Wednesday.
