How many languages out there have passed on over the years without ever getting written down?
The Problem of Michif
The Michif language is spoken by Metis, the descendants of European fur traders (often French Canadians) and Cree-speaking Amerindian women. It is spoken in scattered Metis communities in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba in Canada and in North Dakota and Montana in the United States.
At present, the number of speakers is estimated at fewer than 1,000. It was probably double or triple this number around the turn of the century but never much higher.

The Government of Canada Supports National Michif Language Conference

SASKATOON, January 3, 2008 - On behalf of the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, the Honourable Carol Skelton, Member of Parliament (Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar), today announced funding for the Gabriel Dumont Institute of Native Studies and Applied Research.

Funding of $60,000 will allow the organization to host the 7th National Michif Language Conference. The goals of the conference are to increase the number of Michif speakers, expand opportunities for speaking Michif, and ensure greater numbers of children and young people learn the language.

Yes it is time as this language is in real danger of disappearing , unlike french.

See...now we have TWO threads about Michif.

I think all these indians are misunderstanding what Michif is.

Their parents tell them to learn Michif...and so they go out and light trash cans on fire, and spray paint fences and garages.

Imagine the early days of colonial exploration and settlement in North America. French fur traders crossed vast distances of land, meeting and trading with countless Native tribes. As these explorers immersed themselves in the cultures of the people they met and small culturally mixed
communities arose, a fascinating language called Michif evolved.
[size=9]Although Michif has been used in various written forms, most of Rosen’s work has had to be completed through interviews with individual Michif speakers because there is no one standard written form.
Rosen is working with the Louis Riel Institute and the Manitoba Métis Federation on the development of two beginner language courses for adults.
While there are no courses on the Michif language at the University of Lethbridge, Rosen plans to include a section on Michif in her French in North America course scheduled
Michif mixes the rules of Cree and French grammar to form its own unique tongue. It arose in the Métis’ homeland in the Red River Valley in Manitoba.
Dr. Nicole Rosen (Modern Languages) works with actual Michif speakers to learn about
the structure of this endangered language, which is still used today by a small number of Canadians.
"There is no good description of the language anywhere. I hope to record, document and preserve the Michif language before it falls out of use and is forgotten," says Rosen.
Rosen does not speak the language herself. "I’ve certainly learned some Michif, but I’m not

Maybe you should add your name, and try and get a free flight for you and me to meet her in Calgary! We should be able to find some great barbeque restaurant their!
