1) We’re Hiring: Manitoba is expected to weather the recession better than most places. That means opportunity for you.
2) It’s Affordable: Winnipeg has one of the most affordable housing markets in Canada.
3) You Can Get a Life: Affordable housing + decent commute times = more time for the things that matter.
4) 360 Degrees of Cottage Country: There are dozens of cottage getaways within 100 km of City Limits, including Grand Beach, ranked as one of the best in the world
5) Lots of Cool Stuff to Do: We’ve got a great arts scene, with local live music, theatre, dance, and the world’s biggest names in international touring acts.

And once we get to storing all the snow in huge warehouses to keep perishable goods cold without wasting energy (like they do in N. Japan), then Winnipeg will be even more environment friendly. Smile

Welcome to Gary Doer's socialist worker's paradise! How goes the experiment to communism-lite so far?

1) We're hiring unionized labour for the Province. The private sector doesn't locate here due to payroll taxes.
2) Ancient housing stock keeps the average house price low.
3) Taxes are so high that most hard-working people tread water while the rest are on welfare.
4) If you haven't inherited a cottage, you'll never be able to buy one.
5) Lots of cool taxes to pay. Manitobans elect tax-and-spend governments in order to keep us all poor and to maintain mediocrity so that the fruits of hard working people get re-directed to the lazy welfare bums and perpetual welfare families who figure we "owe" them a living.

Thank you for your excellent leadership, Commiedant Doer!

Doer has ruined Manitoba! Ain't it obvious?!

Painting a rosy picture of Manitoba is precisely what Doer wants. It's misleading to make things look good here when Doer has us under his socialist grip and has spoiled opportunities for growth and prosperity.

What an idiotic post. I can only hope this rubbish is tongue in cheek. If not, aside from being wrong, I find it offensive as I along with the majority of Manitobans have continued to vote NDP because they have done a pretty good job for some time now. Recall the last election when the best promise the Cons could come up with was bringing back the Jets.
The McFadden boys were soundly defeated because no one believed they could accomplish anything worthwhile.
Get on your bicycle and ride around some of the many industrial parks in Winnipeg, you'll find them packed full of a wide range of successful manufacturing plants. Many unionized.

If you are treading water or are on welfare you do have the option of heading to Con central: Zero tax Alberta, where everyone can afford a house and a cottage...

We're worse off because of Doer and his socialist idealogical bent. The proof is in the pudding.

Are you saying we've benefited from Doer's leadership? I disagree!

Fee free to disagree. We could do a lot worse, we could have the folks who were willing to rig the voting to get into power.

The Manitoba NDP are so close to center they've put the Liberals out of business. Continually calling them commies and the like (more than one person here does so) is the part I find particularly offensive.

In the next election you can do your best to support a party that offers a better way. Good luck with that.

What large/major player is going to locate to a province with an NDP government?

Look around and the answer is obvious.

JTF: "Look around and the answer is obvious."

Any well run company is going to look at the big picture:

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/bid-in-for-hiv-vaccine-centre-42843272.html

Dr. Subhash Kapre, president of The Serum Institute:

"I was pleasantly surprised to see a plethora of things going on here.
I thought, 'Why did I not come here earlier?' Now that I have been
exposed to the different work going on (in Winnipeg), I'll go back and
see what kind of solutions can be brought forward with the research
going on over here."

I'm sure he doesn't care which party is in power.

Yikes. How did we get here... Heh heh

Winnipeg is not this horrid place triniman paints. I personally believe Winnipeg and Manitoba are where we are despite too many years under Evil Doer and the NDP. I also believe that were another party in power all these Doer years we'd be in a much better position.

Evil Doer and his left wing pals have moved closer to centre out of convenience but they've got a very long way to get there. Please don't ever lose sight of their ideology. The floodway contracts is a perfect example of how far left Evil Doer remains.

Also keep in mind Evil Doer's ideology is left wing and only leans to the centre out of convenience and a desire to keep in power. He would be radically left were he to be certain to be reelected.

Yeah, but he is not here yet. Maybe when he see's how restrictive Doer and the NDP make it for business he may not come back. Then again it seems this is a strong and growing field in Winnipeg. It does make sense for him to invest here.

The difference is wages union vs non is minimal.

The construction trades work out of union hiring halls. This system works very well for both members and contractors. The rules are different than in the regular workforce (unionized or not).

The contractor like the system. They can call for as many trades people as they need, employ them for short or long periods and lay them off when the job is done. No two week notice, no nothing. Job is over or even we don't like your level of skill or expertise, out you go.

Don't confuse the trades hiring hall system with other big private or government unions it's a completely different situation.

That's NOT what I'm hearing. Believe what you want.

There are contractors that did not bid on those projects as they wanted no part of that horsesh1t socialist system. In my view all that did was drive costs up. Possibly substantially.

You seriously believe forcing business like that is a good thing? Is not socialism in all its' glory? Whoa. Evil Doer is distributing more well consumed kool-aid than I anticipated.

Timelord, your wasting your time. The vast majority of posters on this site are as radically right-wing as they accuse the NDP of being radically left-wing. Your not going to get anywhere arguing against slashing taxes for business while increasing personal taxes, slashing social programs, or driving down wages with the vocal majority here.

If you have an opinion contrary to the radical right-wing your automatically a "commie bastard". Welcome to the minority. I guess the fact that we are one of the only provinces seeing job growth while neo-con Alberta is crashing and burning says wonders for how horrible our commie bastard NDP government is doing.

Enjoying the kool-aid gr???

How do you suppose Manitoba would be faring without all those billions of transfer dollars neo-con Alberta and other provinces have thrown us? The left always seem to forget that don't they?

Make MB a have-province! That way, our hard-earned dollars will get transferred to have-not provinces like Quebec!

If the conservatives were in power, we wouldn't be receiving transfer payments?

No. We'd have no business tax and would be the most business-friendly province of Canada. With such prosperity, we would have lower personal taxes and no need for transfer payments.

Hard to say. Probably would. Although I believe less and less. However I think that kind of thing is an opiate to any government. They argue that once in power they'll do this and that but once there things "change". It's anybody's guess.

I believe that a Conservative party would be more attractive to businesses looking to relocate and for existing businesses to grow. I believe they'd develop policy that would result in more jobs and higher paying jobs. Of course I'm all for increasing wages despite some ignorant comments to the contrary.
