27 killed, 48 killed, the carnage never ceases to amaze me, but I have no recollection of this being so bad 20 or 30 years ago! Now , I think that it isn't a news story that shocks anyone any more!
Is there a defining moment when this started?

Perhaps these things were happening 20 or 30 years ago, but we didn't hear about them. The power of the internet.

The 2nd world was the communist countries. This term has fallen out of usage, in favour of developed, developing, and undeveloped countries.

And the likes of CNN as 30 yrs ago news took sometimes days to get out specially from some countries as they were under communist rule . Now with satellites being relatively cheap every one knows which is not all a good thing we have grown very cynical of the things we should hold dear .

20 More dead- Great News- Do they have the word insurgent on their sweatshirts??
20 insurgents killed after airstrike and clashes in southern Afghanistan

KABUL - The U.S.-led coalition says 20 insurgents were killed after an airstrike and clashes in southern Afghanistan.
The coalition statement says the insurgents died in Kajaki district of Helmand province Wednesday after dozens of militants attacked a combined Afghan-coalition patrol.
There were no casualties among coalition and Afghan troops.
Southern Afghanistan is the centre of the Taliban-led insurgency.
A series of clashes in the same region on Tuesday killed 31 militants.
The region is also the largest opium producing area in the world.
The UN says hundreds of millions of dollars from the illicit trade are used to fund the insurgency.

Margaret Wente's column today in the Globe and Mail is pretty good assessment of Afghanistan.

Personally, I doubt anyone can fix Afghanistan - not even Barack Obama. But both conservatives and liberals have become quite attached to this war. Conservatives think the war will improve security in the West. Liberals think the war will improve the Afghans' lot. And because the UN approves of it, they think it is an exercise in benign humanitarian intervention rather than hubristic imperial overreach.

Mr. Obama's 42-nation coalition of the willing has embraced the folly of imperial responsibility, formerly known as the White Man's Burden. Like the Bush-era neo-cons they despised, they actually believe that an enlightened West has the capacity to install democracy in impoverished Third World countries where most people are illiterate, society is fundamentally clan-based and the only export is opium. Stephen Harper does not believe this. But lots of other people seem to.

Sorry to interrupt, but 1980 is almost 30 years ago; my 30th birthday. How much has this planet advanced in the last 30 years, especially in the justice department?

My goodness, where has the time went?????

Suicide bomber kills 9 Sunni fighters in Iraq, injures 30 others

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

BAGHDAD - A suicide bomber mingled into a crowd of U.S.-allied Sunni paramilitaries in Iraq today and detonated his explosives belt.
He killed nine people and wounded 30 others waiting in line for their salaries.
The explosion took place outside the military headquarters in the town of Jbala, about 50 kilometres south of Baghdad.
Police say the bomber walked into the group of about 250 Awakening Council members and blew himself up.
Salaries for the paramilitaries, which were once paid by the U.S. military, have been delayed by the Iraqi government for two months and there have been concerns among the paramilitaries that the Shiite-led authorities could disband them.
The recent spate of attacks, which this week killed at least 53 people in Baghdad alone, will likely raise concerns about the readiness of Iraqi forces to take over security of their country as U.S. combat troops withdraw from Iraq by the end of August 2010.

I wonder how many people will be killed on a daily basis in Iraq when the US does leave. I'm quite sure there will be reprisals against a large number of "collaborators".

Sixty die in deadliest Iraq bombing since June

Aws Qusay, Reuters Published: Friday, April 24, 2009

BAGHDAD -- In a second day of major bloodshed in Iraq, two female suicide bombers blew themselves up outside a Shi'ite Muslim shrine in Baghdad on Friday, killing 60 people, police said.
The attack was the deadliest single incident in Iraq since a truck bomb in Baghdad killed 63 people on June 17 last year. The two-day death toll of at least 150 raises concerns that a recent decline in violence may have been only a temporary lull.

Baghdad Is Shaken by a Series of Bombs All These Killings- Were They happening 30 Years Ago? 30iraq_xl Karim Kadim/Associated Press

A woman gestured at the wreckage of a car destroyed in a car-bomb explosion on Wednesday in Baghdad’s Sadr City neighborhood.
BAGHDAD — A series of bombs went off in Baghdad on Wednesday, extending a period of violence that has rattled Iraq’s government and security forces.
The pattern of Wednesday’s attacks — including three car bombs in predominantly Shiite areas and two at a Sunni mosque — raised fresh concern that sectarian passions could be inflamed anew.
Accounts of the death toll varied, from at least 17 people to as many as 48, with dozens wounded. So far in April, at least 300 Iraqis have been killed in bombing attacks, making it the bloodiest month since the start of the year and reversing the sharp drops in civilian deaths in January and February.
