Adam Wazny from the Winnipeg Sun has some awesome ideas on how to spend the money
http://www.winnipegsun.com/news/canada/2009/02/20/8458876-sun.html
the best one
If you won $48 million, you could purchase 20,869,565 adult transit fares ($2.30 each) or buy 2,442,748 cases of Labatt 50 Ale ($19.65/doz).
Before you break out the calculator, that's 29,312,976 beers. Upon completion of what would be the greatest party ever held, you'd get back a little less than 3 million bucks from the return of the empties.

I think I will take my whole paycheck on this one!
There are 26 million combinations, so if you cover all combinations you will spend 52,000,000 to win 48,000,000 if you don't end up sharing it, that is if you get 1 ticket for $2? Do you get 3 for the $2 or is that the super lotto where you get 3 chances for the $2?

This reminds me of a story i read online. In some states you can not buy all the combos, so this guy had the bright idea to buy all the combos but one. The guy lost. The person that bought the only remaining combo won. lol!

Dont know if that is true or not.... but a true story in Canada

When the Lotto 6/49 first started hitting it big time... like 11 million I think.. This one family in BC mortgaged their house for 50000 purchased all 649 tickets and won somewhere near 2100 in total.

Sad.. bad true.

A company in the US did decide to play the Powerball when it was at $125M.

The way the rules work though, is that you can't buy more than a certain number of tickets at a time, and vendors are allowed to stop you.

So they had their workers spread out through various locations and buying as many combinations of numbers as they were allowed. All the tickets were "pre-marked".

In the time frame they had...they still did not have enough time to buy every combination of numbers. There were several thousand combinations still not accounted for.

They did end up winning the big prize though, although I believe they had to split with another winner somewhere else.

I can't find an article about it, but I watched the news footage when it was happening back around 1999/2000.

My recollection of the story was they won it and won the other prizes as well.
They had many people buying numbers, but in some cases vendors wouldn't spend the time punching in the specific numbers, because it would take too long.

If you fill in the tickets, there's no punching numbers...you just feed the ticket in the machine, and your lotto ticket comes out.

But yes...lines were out the door in many places because of the top prize...so vendors were limiting ticket sales.
