From what I have read winter tires stop 60% quicker on snow or ice, I don't remember which.
My wife's car is 10 years old and I was thinking of getting her winter tires. I priced some at 2 different places and they started at $82 to $84 which at Kal Tire ended at %498 including labour and taxes.
I thought the $149 at Costco for the best was outrageuos when I saw the $82 price, but I think Costco's included the labour . but not the taxes. I figured $82x4=$328 but I don't think I want to spend $500 to $700, not after 10 years!
What do you run on in Winter. Her car is a Honda Accord and I figure it will run another 10 years. 195x65x15

Colleague just bought four newish snow tires and rims through Craig's List for $400. Give that a look-see.

I've winter tires and they are worth making the change for. Stopping distances are greatly improved in my car over the all seasons that its wearing. Starts are much easier. Be sure to get all FOUR tires. It's no good to you when your back half of the car is losing traction on turns and the fronts are still biting.

I bought both of my sets from Costco. Prices included the installation. I also have lifetime tire swaps for free when the season calls for winter and back to summer, so long as I keep the receipt and have a set of winter rims for the spare set of tires. If not, they'll still do it, but for a $30 balancing fee. Might be some better deals out there, but its pretty convenient.

Winter tires are definitely the way to go. They double the life of your summer tires Wink Wink , and give you the added bonus of better traction during the winter. Sure, it is a big initial investment, but over time, you'll see it didn't cost you a thing at all! People that run all season tires tend to toss them prematurely because they lack traction in the snow. Why waste money like that? I recommend to all people at our dealership they run snow tires for winter. I have a set of no name directional studded tires on my 99 Civic, and I can get as much traction as a AWD vehicle running stock All Seasons (as long as clearance isn't an issue). Studs are excellent on packed snow/ice.

Just bought my first full set ever this weekend. 225-60/R17 on brand new shiny steelies. It's amazing how much softer the rubber is, the tread blocks are squishy to the touch. I don't imagine they'd last too long with summer use!

Aren't most of our roads snow-free most of the time? Wink

I've seen people use winter tires all year 'round. They will wear a little faster and make more road noise, but they're not that bad. If you are only keeping your car for a few years, it's an option.

Absolutely invest in a set of winter tires. They are not magic, but they do help with stopping and starting, and it's one of the cheapest ways to reduce your chances of getting into an accident. Phone around for prices, as they vary greatly. For my summer tires Denray was the best, and their service was good too. (Kal was most expensive for the particular type that I wanted.)

My all-seasons on my 4x4 work just fine.

I've got Goodyear Fortara Tripple-Tread's on it, they are the best all season truck tire available for traction on snow and ice.....also good in the non winter months too!

The best part, I don't need to invest in a second set of tires and rims. winter tires - Winter Tires or All Season? Icon_smile

Canadian Tire - $777 mounted balanced taxes in. This was for the tires only - the steelies I sourced off ebay.

I got mine at WalMart many years ago - they had the cheapest rims. Costco is a great option as they do the seasonal switch overs free each year. If she does a lot of driving the reduced wear on the all season could also be a factor.

That's because they are Chineese and substandard, like everything sold there.Wheels are no place to cut corners.

yeah you can definately tell the difference between the poor quality Chinese ones and the high quality Finnish ones.

The Chinese ones are alot harder.

I don't know where the rims were made, but the tires were made in U.S.A. I think.

Most of the time a set of winter tires is usually around the same price as your insurance deductible. Even if it saves you from one bumper bash over the multiple winters of use you will get out of them, they are worth it. Not to mention they may even save yours, or someone else life.

To all the people who say "I get by on my all seasons", as far as i'm concerned I want the best traction I can get for the winter season. Have fun sliding all over the road as I drive by.

On an interesting note, living in Tuxedo is hilarious come snow storms. All these people in their big luxury cars/SUVs who are too cheap/stupid to buy snow tires. I've seen some very expensive wipe outs!

point of note...

ALOT.. and I mean ALOT of new cars dont even have real "all seasons" on them. They have touring tires which while great for highway driving and test driving because of reduced road noise are absolute crap for anything other then dry roads... even if they have a M+S on the sidewall.

@ ET, I meant the wheels, from Wal-mart = from China.

@ Dean, very true! The high end cars have touring/performance tires to get the best out of the car in dry or rainy conditions. They do not work in snow! Just feel the rubber compound, the ice/snow tire will have a much softer feel to it. Plus, when you are using winter tires your summers (and your pretty aluminum wheels) are not getting used, making them last longer.

I tried to get winter tires three years ago for my Jeep Grand Cherokee. They did not make them for that size vehicle. Seriously. I looked everywhere.

Is this the case for other SUVs?

There should be such tires as they are mandatory in Quebec during winter.

These guys have 'em. http://wheelandtiredepot.com/
